MRC Safety

All MRC members, guests, and coaches are expected to adhere to the safety guidelines as written in the Safety Manual.

Prior to rowing this year review this Safety check list:

  1. Review the Safety video/cd located at the Boathouse (it should be left by the video machine).
  2. Review the Cold Water and Low Light policies below. Early spring rowing requires sharp attention to detail.
  3. Proper lighting on all rowing boats and launches will be a priority this season. A copy of the MN DNR "Metro River Guide" will be posted on the Safety bulletin board near the ergs. All MRC launches will have both stern and bow lights permanently affixed for use. Make an extra effort to keep the lights attached and in working condition.
  4. Pay closer attention to the traffic pattern of the river this season. Do not take more than 1/2 width of the river at any time especially when other college/university crews are also on the water. When heading back to the dock from below Lake Street, stay on the St. Paul side of the river, not the Minneapolis side, and cross over after the bridge. This will avoid disrupting flow of rowers heading down river.
  5. Safety contacts for the club this season are J. Gorlin and M. O'Donnell. In order for information and communication to flow freely among club members, each captain will be the contact person for Safety issues within individual programs, except that the Junior Team Head Coach will be that groups contact person. Any member at any time should know where to go for Safety questions or concerns. One of the Safety contacts will contact captains as positions are filled.
  6. There is a mailbox for "Safety" located upstairs in the Boathouse.

Cold Water Policy
Club equipment will only be used as described below when cold water rowing conditions exist, defined as water temperature below 55 degrees Fahrenheit, as determined by the Commodore.

  • When the water temperature is below 45 degrees, all club-owned boats must be accompanied by a launch and must remain within 500 meters of that launch. The boats must be signed out in the MRC log book, listing the name of the launch driver who is accompanying those boats.

  • When the water temperature is between 45 and 55 degrees, club-owned boats must stay in groups of two or more, and must remain within 250 meters of all other boats in their group. The boats must be signed out in the club log book, listing all other boats in the group.

Owners of private equipment are strongly encouraged to follow the above guidelines, and are expected to make responsible and mature decisions in an effort to promote safe and responsible rowing for all club members.

These guidelines establish a minimum safety standard. All rowers are encouraged to use extreme caution in any conditions that pose a risk of hypothermia.

    Low-Light Policy
All boats rowing after sunset or before sunrise are required by Minnesota law to display a white light that is visible from a distance of at least two miles.

In addition, all club-owned boats which are rowing more than thirty minutes before sunrise or more than thirty minutes after sunset must be accompanied by a launch unless specifically exempted by the Commodore. Sunset and sunrise times are to be determined by the Commodore, and are published in the Department of Natural Resources' publication "Minnesota Boating Guide."
The boats must be signed out in the MRC log book, listing the name of the launch driver who is accompanying those boats.

Owners of private equipment are strongly encouraged to follow the above guidelines, and are expected to make responsible and mature decisions in an effort to promote safe and responsible rowing for all club members.

These guidelines establish a minimum safety standard. All rowers are encouraged to use extreme caution in low-light conditions, including those that exist due to weather conditions.
